Class of '88

  • SRM Color : 70
  • Brewer: Deschutes And Great Lakes Brewing
  • Brewer's Description:  We've teamed up with another porter brewmaster — Great Lakes Brewing Co. of the famed Edmund Fitzgerald Porter — to create a very special porter for the Class of '88. This Imperial Smoked Porter is brewed with both roasted and smoked malt that delivers not only a subtle smoky flavor but a rich, chocolaty aroma. Enjoy every layer of porter craftsmanship from this limited-run collaboration.
  • Recommended Glassware: A Goblet
  • Russ' rating: 8.5 of 10
  • With the brew: Dynamically Assembled Query Strings
  • Comments: This beer cracks open with a smokey nose and that sets the tone fro the entire experience. The pour is not as thick as you would expect. The head is made of smaller than average ( <0.5mm ) bubbles and dissipates quickly but leaves a crown on the top of the beer. The smoke flavor is dominant, but hints at a chocolate and malty body underneath. The aftertaste is again smokey with a slightly amaroidal flavor. I would say this beer exceeds style expectations but would be hard for some to enjoy.

  1. I love Black Butte (so glad it's available near me now), and I love Edmund Fitzgerald, and those 2 are definitely at the top of my list in that category. Yet I couldn't get behind this beer, which is disappointing. I wanted these 2 breweries to convince me that I could enjoy a smoked beer, but it just didn't happen.
