Nectar Ales 2011 Black Xantus

  • Brewer's Description:  Black Xantus (pronounced Zantis) is truly a unique bird.  An Imperial Stout aged in American oak barrels, infused with fresh organic/ fair-trade coffee from our local coffee roaster, Jobella Coffee Roasters.  This special, limited release beer bursts with bourbon and espresso aromas leading into chocolate and black cherry flavor.  It’s 11% ABV is softened by time in barrels which also contributes to the beer’s appeal.  We are very proud of this new addition to the Nectar Ales family.

  • Comments: What a wonderful beer this is! It has been waiting in my cellar fro a cold winter night and for whatever reason tonight was it. It pours heavily into the glass with little or no head. The more Imperial Stouts I try the more I see this as the norm. The bubbles were of normal size (0.5mm - 0.7mm) and while they dissipated fairly quickly I never felt like the beer was flat. The aroma from the glass is instantly familiar with coffee, bourbon  and nutty hints. The beer itself is thick and viscous, even leaving a slowly receding film on the inside of the glass. I tasted the coffee first on the front of my tongue with the nutty sweetness of the bourbon and barrel aging lingering in the back of my mouth. I would not say the beer was bitter at all, but with an 11% ABV it was warming from start to finish, and a wholly pleasant beer.
