Belhaven Scottish Ale

  • SRM Color : 13
  • Brewer: Belhaven Brewery
  • Brewer's Description: Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and we've been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.
  • Recommended Glassware: A Conic or Nonic
  • Russ' rating: 7.5 of 10
  • With the brew: The Return of Old Friends
  • Comments: The year is 2001, and the location is a tiny little pub in Tallahassee called Leon Pub. Asia dominates the Juke box selection, and Pacman is the only game in the joint. Everything is 15 years too late. Amid all of the nostalgia lives the best draft beer menu in 4 counties. It is here I have Belhaven for the first time and fall in love. In the following years I tried to drink the bottled version but the brewer insisted on clear bottles, and by  the time it reached Florida, it was bitter and lifeless. Fast forward to 2012 and I now live in Kansas City. my favorite package store brings in a limited shipment of Belhaven in CO2 cans and I immediately pick up a 4 pack. The Beer poured quick and smooth from the can, with smaller than average bubbles (<0.5mm). The cascading head is typical of canned Drought beers with a CO2 "Widget". The flavor is less intense than I remember, but 11 years of idolization may play into the equation. The beer is malty and mild, making for a very easy drink. The head lasted the entire beer and provided a creamy residue in the bottom of the glass. There was no hint of bitter hops, but the beer did not miss it in its plainness.  I was slightly disappointed in the beer, but it still ranks better than many common brews.

Do you agree? Do you think I completely missed on this one? Feel free to leave a comment below, give me a +1, or "Like" my post!
