Black Butte

  •  SRM Color : 35
  • Brewer: Deschutes Brewery
  • Brewer's Description: With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.
  • Russ' rating: 9 of 10
  • With the brew: Holiday Cheer
  • Comments: I owe my friend Steve C. for providing this beer. Again. This was another holiday trade , and as much as I like what I sent him, his beers from Deschutes are always such a treat. The Black Butte poured out heavily with a lovely caramel colored head with average size (0.5mm - 0.7mm) bubbles. They cascaded down the inside of the glass into the dark black body. The scent is that of toasted grains with a hints of both malty sweetness and mild hop spice. The beer drank much as its scent implied it would. It had a robust toasted grain flavor that was warming as you drank it. The malt and hops finished the taste well with a fine accent to the nice full body. Thanks again Steve! To your Health and Happiness.

  1. Russ. I knew I liked the taste of this beer but I never knew why. I read your review then went to the fridge and opened another one. Ahhhhhh, this IS a great beer.

  2. Russ, you put into words what I thought of this beer. My comments can be boiled down into 3 words: "damn good beer."
